An LED wall is thousands of red, green and blue LEDs on modules, built into cabinets and joined into one seamless screen. How closely those LEDs are spaced, how bright they are and how they are protected decide what the wall costs and where it works.

Each LED holds a red, a green and a blue chip. Hundreds of them sit on a module, commonly 320 × 160 mm. Modules, a power supply and a receiving card fit into a cabinet, and cabinets lock together into a wall of almost any size.
A video processor takes your laptop, camera or media player input and maps it across the wall. For signage, a small player with Wi-Fi, 4G or USB plays scheduled content on its own.

Every cabinet carries its own power supply and receiving card, with power and data looped from one cabinet to the next. Die-cast aluminium cabinets are light, flat and quick to align; steel cabinets are used for large outdoor screens.
Front-service cabinets let modules come out from the front, so a wall can sit flat against your wall with no access space behind it.

SMD screens use LEDs in individual packages. They are the most common, cost less and are easy to repair module by module. COB (chip on board) seals the LEDs under one resin layer: tougher against knocks and dust, deeper blacks and the finest pitches, at a higher price. GOB adds a protective glue coat over SMD LEDs, a middle path for screens people can touch.

The pitch is the distance between pixels in millimetres. Halve the pitch and you get four times the LEDs in the same area, and a much higher price. Pay for the pitch your viewers need: as a rule, the closest viewer should be at least as many metres away as the pitch number.
